Do You Need Travel and Liability Insurance?
Ela Angevine
When moving to a new place, creating a new home for yourself, insurance can be the most important thing you start with. Seguro de enfermedad allows you to go about your day-to-day life, play recreational sports, take transportation, etc. without worry.
But do you need Travel Insurance or other Liability Insurance?
Why Choose Travel Insurance?
Students that need visas to stay in the Czech Republic have comprehensive health insurance as a requirement which, in most cases, also covers accidents and emergencies in the Schengen region.
Being in Prague gives many students an opportunity to explore Europe, but not all of Europe is within the Schengen zone. Cyprus and Ireland are not Schengen despite being in the EU. Non-EU and non-schengen countries include: Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
Importantly, comprehensive health insurance is mainly designed to cover medical expenses and does not provide protection for other travel-related problems.Travel insurance offers broader coverage.
In addition to emergency medical treatment, it can include benefits such as trip cancellation, flight delays, missed departures, lost or stolen luggage, and personal liability. These situations can cause significant inconvenience and expense, especially for students on a limited budget.
Another advantage of travel insurance is access to emergency assistance services. Many policies provide 24-hour support, helping travelers find medical care, replace travel documents, or arrange emergency transportation when needed.
Many students chose to purchase travel insurance going back home for the summer or Christmas, especially those that cancelled their insurance cover back home. Note: Travel insurance does not cover the domestic (CZ) area.
Why Have Liability Insurance?
This type of insurance is often a requirement of the landlord in order to protect his property. This will depend on your rental agreement.
When renting an apartment, accidents can happen. You might accidentally damage the property, cause a water leak, or break something that belongs to the landlord. Liability insurance helps cover the cost of such damage, protecting you from unexpected expenses.
Liability insurance is not expensive, however, having it can avoid paying large repair costs or not receiving all of your deposit if an accident occurs in your rented apartment. Additionally, it includes public liability, so even breaking something out of the apartment at university or causing an accident is also included for normal everyday activities.
